changes in 8 years

It is amazing how 8 years has brought a lot of changes to the kids with special needs. Do you think RTI has brought the change we want?

feedback on 3/31/09 class

comment:
Being the only international student in the class, I thought I might be the one who would most relate to the readings, but I was surprised to see that others had a lot to say about the topic.
Social issues such as women’s status and gender roles are very sensitive issues that need to be tackled but with care and wisdom. For women to understand their role in societies were they has low roles, I think it is very important that women be educated first on how to understand their situation. Without understanding the importance of their positions, women can’t fulfill their mission. Two powerful models of how females can change their conditions one in Parvana and the other one in the Japanese mom. Very nice reading which I enjoyed.

connection:
I was so lucky this week to have the opportunity to have a personal experience with the reading. As I told you in class, while heading for the meeting with you I was approached by an angry driver who started shouting at me. He asked (not in a polite way but in a very angry tone) to pull over because I am under arrest and to make things worst he added you are going to jail. I did not ignore a sign nor was I speeding. My car is up to date with all the registration. Still when I opened my window to understand what was going on (it is one of these times when you think you don't speak English but rather some other language) he insisted that I have “to pull over” because “I am under arrest” and that he is going to “take me to jail”. The car was not a police car and he failed to show me any identification. When I demanded some form of ID (he drove away still shouting) and still telling me that “I am going to jail”.
Following advises of reporting the incident, on my way home I visited the police station. It was quiet, only one person a head of me. I was there around 8:20 and I had to wait for almost an hour to see an officer who was so nice. She took the information and she went to check his information (she also took my information). I asked her if this is going to take a long time (by that time I was sure my family were starting to worry a bout me) she assured me that it will only take few minutes. She came out with another police officer (an older male). The older officer started asking me questions but by that time I was so tired to give any more answers or to remember any other details (and to tell you the truth I was afraid). I was afraid that I will be victimized twice in the same day for something that I did not do. Both officers promised to get back to me on Monday (since they would be having some stuff till then). Anyway by the time I was home I found a message on my answering machine form the younger female officer telling me that “the person was contacted by them and he is very nice man different than the way he behaved earlier with me and he was apologetic for what happened”. I thought this could be a good connection to our readings, our discussions, and our dreams. ---------
For this reason, I have NO COMMENT this week.

question:

I wonder if self confident and well education would guarantee any woman a fair treatment. Would factors such as color, back grounds, and look have impact on the treatment of a woman in any country in the world even in the land of freedom?

feedback on 3/17/09 class:

Comment: It is so good if we can, as educators, use some of the ideas we learn among the way in our daily life. My kids attend a privet school, and the school is having some difficulties. My son came to me and said: I wanted to go to the hearing so I can talk to people and tell them how important for us to keep our school running. I told my son about the “British save our school project”. My son was so happy of the idea. He is talking about doing something similar. I feel good to be able to implement the idea on a personal level. Thanks Dr. Vivian.

Connection: Doing the critical literacy trail about “The breadwinner” story with a group of girls was a great idea for me. I was able to use technology to communicate with the 5th member of the group since she doesn’t live in USA. I was able to get her feedback on the story as well as her drawing. I enjoyed working with the girls and I enjoyed the sense of responsibility and commitment they showed during the time we worked together.

Question:
How would we, teachers and educators, be able to create the right space for young girls to make them understand why girls their age in other places of the world are being treated differently not only from them but also from male figures living in the same societies?

feedback on 3/3/09

question:
Can we really shift the blame from the students to put it on someone else? When is it time to blame the method used in teaching so we can start making changes?

Comment:
16 years ago when my son (now 20 Years old) used to go to head start program in Fairfax County, his home room teacher had a master degree and 15 years of teaching experiences. Her assistance, a young girl, was holding a collage degree in teaching and 4 years in teaching. 6years ago when my daughter went to school, her teacher had a 2 years teaching certificate and 3 more experience in teaching. Today in many classrooms around the country many teachers has no prior experiences in being with kids not only teaching. I wonder what made things change so dramatically for an important arena such as education.

Connection:
Sitting listening to Dr. Pedro passion and true interest for making a difference and making the right change was so good. I am sure many people as passionate and as loyal.

feedback for 2-24-09 class

Question:
So much research and theories when is it time for implementation? How can we overcome the obstacles and move from theory to practice?

Comment:
The discussion of improving urban youth’ educational outcome through their involvement in critical social skills is really a wonderful approach. As many might argue that the problem with youth’ education lay on the shoulders of the youth themselves, others might disagree and point out that teachers are the main reason behind the falling of students. i agree with the authors on the importance of involving students in the educational process as subjects not objects. In my opinion, teachers should be given more space to be able to serve their students and they should be encouraged to modifying their pedagogy of teaching to accommodate the students’ needs and abilities.

Connection:

I think it will always come down to how creative is the teacher. By being creative, teachers can inspire students’ senses and imagination. I truly believe that behind a great person there is a great teacher.

Social Action Project Ideas:
_____________________________

For my social action project I am planning on helping one person. For this purpose the choice was made on helping a young lady who did not finish school at her country. Coming to USA from Afghanistan, Mona worked in many places to support her mom, her younger sister, and herself. Finally, after a lot of moving her manger at a department store, where she worked last, told her that she is not needed any more. I decided on finding Mona a place where she can study the English language for free. Mona will also need to have some help to find a job. For this reason, she will need to learn how to use the pc and some of its applications. At Fairfax adult education, Mona will attend classes twice weekly where she will learn secretarial duties through enrolling in certification program.

Question:

I wonder with the crowded curriculum that keeps adding up with each grade level, how much time the kids will have to maintain their critical thinking? In another word: kids should be learning critical thinking but how can we guarantee that schools would create critical space for students in the future?

Comment:

When asked about the future and follow up of the kids, Dr. Vivian’s mentioned among other things a negative reaction from the teacher that was in charge of them the following year. It is frightening how much this attitude toward their way of thinking would affect them if not damage them.

Connection:

It is so important to teach kids How to tackle challenging situations. In every situation I was amazed how kids were able to think of ways that allowed them to solve their problems on their own. It is so powerful how kids can develop negotiation strategies at such early age. While reading I remembered one night when I was 8 years old, our house was full of people and noise. My mom put us to bed (regardless of all the noise and music) and went to sit with her guest. We lay on our beds my little sister and me for hours listening to the happy sounds outside of our bedroom. we decided that we need to send our mom a letter to tell her how bad it is for us going to bed while everyone is having fun. So with no lights in the room except form the lights coming form the living room we took a tissue and we started writing mom our plead to join the rest of the party. Thank you Dr. Vivian you took me back to the good old days----a long time ago.
